President’s Corner

See the USA in your Nissan, hey
America is asking you to call
Drive your Nissan hey, through the USA
America’s the greatest land of all

On a highway, or a road along the levee
Performance is sweeter
Nothing can beat her
Life is completer in a Z

So make a date today to see the USA
And see it in your Z car, hey

Travelin’ east, Travelin’ west
Wherever you go Nissan service is best
Southward or north, near place or far
There’s a Nissan dealer for your Z car

See the U.S.A. in your Z car, hey
The Rockies way out west are calling you
Drive your Z car through the U.S.A
Where fields of golden wheat pass in review

Whether Trav’ling light or with a load that’s heavy
Performance is sweeter, oh.. nothing can beat ‘er
Life is completer in a Z car, hey
So make a date today to see the U.S.A
And see it in your Nissan Z.

I was looking for a springy car song and came across Dinah Shore doing this commercial jingle in a video from 1953, which makes it as old as me. She was promoting and hyping the Chevrolet. And, according to what I read, she was responsible for selling millions of Chevrolets. I remembered the jingle being a fun little tune so I equated that with spring and decided to plagiarize the song. I hope the copyright has expired. Doesn’t it just make you want to go buy a new Nissan?

Spring weather came to mind looking at the sunshine and lack of snow on the foothills and our backyard. I was thinking that our upcoming monthly meeting on May 1 could be the first one where we hold the 50/50 outside by our cars. Then I looked at the weather forecast and that thought quickly vanished. Can you believe that the forecast is for snow for Monday and Tuesday, April 29 and 30th? Monday is supposed to have a high of just 35 degrees and Tuesday just 37 degrees. The kicker is that Tuesday morning it’s supposed to be only 31 degrees. Though Wednesday is supposed to be a little better with 37 and 51 degrees as the low and high with a chance of rain, it’s still not the weather I want to take my Z out in and certainly not with the top down. I guess we’ll have to wait for June for the first outdoor 50/50. Remember, a free 50/50 ticket if you drive your Z.

We are going to have a speaker at the meeting on May 1. Joey Parent from Boulder Nissan is going to be at the meeting and talk about the advantages of Boulder Nissan. It will be a quick refresher as to why we should patronize Boulder Nissan, aside from, as you all know they are our sponsor, as I so often remind the club.

As I’m sure you all know, there was a very sobering tragedy on I-70 Thursday afternoon. At about 5:00 pm, about 2 hours after I and thousands others had passed that very spot on eastbound I-70 at Denver West, a presumably out of control tractor trailer loaded with lumber crashed into the backed up traffic. 24 cars and 4 trucks were involved, with 27 of those drivers minding their own business as they were stuck in a worse than usual backup, partly caused by an accident at Ward Road, on that part of I-70. 4 people died due to the actions and inaction of 1 truck driver. I only bring this up as any one of us could have been in that traffic jam and been injured, or God forbid killed, for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We’ve all been stuck in traffic on the highways and I encourage all of you to remain vigilant at all times including checking your rearview mirror even if you’re not moving and just stuck there.

One of our members called me the other day with some concerns he has about the club. I was already aware of most of those concerns including one that I, and the Board, and many of our members are quite aware, That is our declining membership and how do we market our club and increase membership. I struggled with that the 1st time I was president just as I struggle with it now. Placing business cards for the club on windshields is great, which by the way is how I found out about the club about 20 years ago, and sometimes gets us new members. One time while on a driving event with the club, Tammy handed a card through the passenger window to another Z driver. He and his wife actually joined the club, but I’m afraid happenings like that are too few and far between to be effective to increase membership. Here’s the point: If any of you have ideas on how to market the club to increase membership, PLEASE get those ideas to the Board so we can do what we can to get our name and activities out there. Our participation in car shows is a great way to meet new people so I encourage everyone to get in as many shows as you can. The “Scoop” newsletter is a great way to find out or as Diana as she does many shows and is a great promoter of the club. Please get the Board those ideas.

I hope to see everyone at the meeting on May 1 at Overland Golf Course and please, stay alert and drive carefully.
