Hot Import Nights

“Money, get away.
Get a good job with good pay and you’re okay.
Money, it’s a gas.
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I’ll buy me a football team.”
– Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon

Money. That’s a lot of what this column is about. Money. That’s because it is my pleasure and to my great relief, that I can announce to you that we have a new Treasurer for the Club. Money. Soon our money will be handled and controlled by a Club member who is a CPA who has his own accounting firm. Money. He is also adept in international accounting including international tax returns. Money. This very qualified member is Bill Lohringel, whom most of you know and you also know his wife LaVerne. They have a 1985 300ZX. Money. Soon Bill will be the one that we will be going to for reimbursements and to find out the Club’s bank balance. Money.

I am also very happy to report that our sponsor, Jason Purdum, the owner of Boulder Nissan, has agreed to sponsor ZCCC for another year. I will be getting together with him soon to complete the paperwork and finalize the agreement. I think that is great news and STRONGLY encourage all of our members to patronize Boulder Nissan to show our appreciation for their continuing involvement in our Club. If you are looking for a car, new or used, please at least go there and get a price from their great sales department and let them know you are a ZCCC member. When you go there for service, say Hi to Eric Stockton, the service director, and make sure you mention the Club to get your discount.

Staying on the subject of happy things, Eventbrite is on the way out as Scott Swiger, our Webmaster, has found a plug-in to replace it. Scott reports: “I’ve installed an events calendar plugin (https://theeventscalendar.com) that can hopefully replace Eventbrite. It’s free, with Plus & Pro versions (and they offer those for free to non-profits, if we do need any of their features).

Take a look at the site: In the left sidebar, the mini-calendar is replaced with a simple list of upcoming events. The same goes for the main Events page: http://www.zccc.org/events

I’ve set up 3 events, and have configured them to demonstrate some of the features of the plugin:

Click the Feb Board Meeting link; you’ll notice it prompts you to login. So the plugin can restrict viewing of events to members only. Then click the Feb General Meeting link; you’ll see the event detail page, which includes Google map and links to export event to Apple or Google Calendars.

Last, notice the Annual Chili Cookoff has an RSVP feature (which also requires being logged in). We don’t have to use RSVPs for the cookoff, I just wanted to demo it. Go ahead and test it out; after you RSVP you should get a confirmation email with your “tickets” (which will be more useful when we actually need to charge for an event).

Let me know what you think, if there’s anything missing, any features to test out, etc…”

Go ahead and play with these things if you are so inclined and let Scott (webmaster@zccc.org) or a Board member know how it worked for you and if you found any problems or glitches.

AND, elsewhere in the Odometer, you will find an article by Diana Inberg outlining a car show at the Denver Mart on March 31. Please read the article and sign up for the event. If we get 10 members signing up, we get the $10 discount on the entry fee. The code for the $10 discount is ZCLUB.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at the next general meeting on February 7 at the Overland Golf Course clubhouse. Until then…

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Dan Gurney, the first driver with victories in each of the
Formula One, IndyCar series, died Sunday from complications of pneumonia. He was 86.

Gurney began racing in 1955 and won in nearly every racing series he attempted. He drove for Ferrari, BRM, Porsche and Brabham in Formula One, then formed his own team. He won the Belgian Grand Prix in 1967 in his own car, the first and only tie an American won an F1 race in a car of his own design.

Gurney teamed with AJ Foyt that year to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Ford GT40, and he’s often credited with starting the tradition of spraying the champagne from the podium at the race.

Gurney retired from driving in 1970 with 51 victories.

“When we talk about legendary American drivers, owners and car constructors on an international stage, Dan Gurney is one of the all-time greats”, Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles said in a statement. “His skill in all three areas helped him make an indelible mark and serve as a huge influence in this sport. Dan was a giant in the racing world, in every sense.”

Scott Guthrie has been contacted by SkySox Center asking how many tickets the club was going to want and for which game. Due to his current health issues, Scott is asking if someone would like to take over this event this year: “It is not a hard 4 points to get, but I just can’t do it. I release ‘ownership’ of this event.”

The club needs to figure out what day they want to go, and what the expected count will be. 35 people seems to have been good the last 2 yrs.

Our contact at the SkySox center is Jonathan Basil (jbasil@skysox.com). Jon is a great guy and can help with details, and I told him to work with someone else in our club if he gets a call, so he is ‘ready to go’. He’ll work with the club on total ticket count.

The schedule is already posted on their website: http://www.SkySox.com.

The package we have been getting is the Coors Picnic Terrace package. This year it is $27 per adult. I suggest the person running the event get in touch soon to discuss the special nights so we can get the fireworks, or whatever other special events they have going on. The schedule doesn’t seem to indicate that, but I may have missed it.

They will want a deposit, and the remainder a few weeks prior to the game. I have always paid out of pocket, but the club may decide to cover the deposit since it is for such a long time.

The sooner we schedule a date, the better chance we have of getting the night we want. Some special events fill up quickly. Remember that firework displays are only for games at night. 🙂

Please let me know if you need any information and pass my contact info to anyone thinking about it if they have questions.

Take care!
Scott Guthrie

Boulder Nissan Vehicle Details

Snow Toyota Supra Fools Canadian Police
Montreal police probably rolled their eyes at the person who parked their snow-covered early 90s Toyota Supra right in a snow-removal lane, completely blocking in other parked cars. They went to ticket the car, and got to the point of lifting its very real windshield wiper when they realized, hey, this isn’t a snow-covered car — it’s a snow pile shaped like a car. That snow-sculpture of a car, cunningly placed for maximum police confusion, was the work of 33-year-old machinist and artist who goes by Simpon Laprise. Jalopnik.
